Discipline
When parents enrol a student at Horowhenua College, they undertake to see that their child abides by the school rules set down by the Board of Trustees. These are intended to promote students' welfare and to assist in the smooth running of the college. The following are drawn to the attention of parents as being areas where co-operation is especially sought.
- The key principles of our discipline system are:
- All students have a right to learn
- All teachers have a right to teach
- All students can behave.
Students make CHOICES about the way they behave. If they know the consequences of their behaviours - rewards for good behaviour, punishments for bad behaviour - then the choice is theirs.
The fundamental principle of behaviour at the College is No Abuse :
Of yourself
eg. no smoking cigarettes (the College is a Smokefree zone), using drugs or drinking alcohol, or bringing any of these substances to school
Of others
eg. no bullying, physical and verbal abuse or harassment
Of property
(property belonging to yourself, other students, staff or the school) eg. no theft, tampering, graffiti, littering
Of the College's reputation
bringing the College's reputation into question by action or word - this includes when going to and from school and/or when in school uniform.
College Expectations
- At all times students are expected to:
- Show courtesy, consideration and commonsense
- Be in the correct place at the correct time
- Be in tidy and correct uniform
- Co-operate immediately with all staff requests and instructions
The College may keep a student on detention after school. Parents would be notified. For serious breaches of school discipline students may be suspended and later brought before the Board who will decide their future at the College.
