Senior English

Apart from learning to appreciate English in all its wonderful forms, the main focus of a senior English class is to earn credits towards gaining qualifications - namely, NCEA (the National Certificate of Educational Achievement) at three levels.

Each senior class involves completing 'units' of work that are worth a certain number of credits.  A unit may take anywhere between one week to three terms to complete.  Each unit is either an Achievement Standard or a Unit Standard.

Senior English classes are not streamed, although some teachers may offer different types of units to the students in their classes.

Year 11 classes
  • It is compulsory to take English in year 11.
  • To  meet Level 1 NCEA literarcy requirements, students need at least 4 reading credits and 4 writing credits; otherwise, they will not be allowed to attempt Level 2 English standards.
  • Students can continue to attempt Level 2 standards in other subjects, but they will not be awarded Level 1 NCEA.

Year 12 classes

  • It is compulsory to take English in year 12,  but students may complete standards at either Level 1 or Level 2.
  • There are no literacy requirements in Level 2 NCEA.
  • However, students have the opportunity to gain University Entrance by securing 4 reading credits and 4 writing credits at Level 2.
  • At Horowhenua College, students need to achieve at least one externally assessed Level 2 standard to progress to a year 13 English class.

Year 13 classes

  • Students do not have to take English in year 13, although those intending to move on to tertiary education are advised to complete Level 3 English standards.
