Describe the main food classes which make up the diet of herbivore, carnivore, omnivore
Recognise the importance of food as a source of energy; for growth and repair
List the main food groups
Describe the structure of cellulose, starch, sucrose, maltose and glucose (carbohydrates); lipids and proteins
Identify the main components of various foods
Carry out simple food tests and recognise the positive result for the identification of starch, glucose, lipids and proteins
Recognise the importance of vitamins and minerals
Describe the purpose of digestion
Describe the structure and function of the generalised digestive system
Be able to label and describe the function of the following parts: Buccal cavity, pharynx, salivary glands, oesophagus, sphincter so stomach, duodenum, bile duct, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, ileum, caecum, appendix, colon, rectum, anus.
Describe physical digestion including tooth structure and type of teeth
Describe peristalsis
Describe chemical digestion in the different parts of the digestive system
Describe the main differences in the structure of the digestive systems of herbivores, carnivores and omnivores
Describe how enzymes work and name the enzymes involved in digestion including their substrate and products
Describe the factors that influence enzyme action
The role of the liver and pancreas and bile in digestion
Describe egestion
Circulatory System
Where do digested molecules go
The function of the liver
Structure of veins, arteries and arterioles
Structure and function of the heart
Explain blood pressure, heart beat and capillaries
Describe how molecules enter cells
Describe the structure and function of lymph system
Explain why we need circulation
Describe the functions of blood
What happens to digested foods
Describe aerobic and anaerobic respiration and compare and contrast these processes
Explain how mammals breathe
Describe the structure and function of the respiratory system
Explain gas exchange including diffusion of gases
Cells and Respiration
Recognise the basic structure and function of cells- cell membrane and mitochondria
Recognise the building blocks of the molecules that make up cells
Describe respiration in the mitochondria and it's purpose
Describe the function of the lung in obtaining oxygen from the blood and removing carbon dioxide produced in respiration
