​Lesson 1: Introduction to Puberty

Lesson 1: Learning Objectives
 
​By the end of the lesson students will be able to:

-          establish class ground rules for this unit

-          understand that puberty affects individuals at different times and in different ways.

-          begin a document or presentation that they will be able to keep notes and complete activities in throughout the term

​Ground Rules
Due to the nature of the things we will be learning about and discussing this term it is important that as a class you have some ground rules. This will ensure that the class is a safe environment to be in. These rules MUST be kept to throughout the whole term.
 
​Activity: You teacher may ask you to help come up with some rules for the class either in a shared google doc or in your books. Discuss your rule with those around you before you contribute it to the class.
 

Below is an example of some good rules to get your thinking started.
 
 
​Set Up Puberty Notes -Doc/Presentation
For the puberty unit you will create a digital document or presentation. This will enable you to keep all the information in one place and also gives you a place to complete activities such as brainstorms. What form this takes is completely up to you choose an app or program that works best on your device. Some good free apps would be keynote, pages, google docs (through web browser not app), power point or educreations. Paid apps that would also be great and take your work to the next level would be Book Creator or Notability.
 
Leave the first page empty to be used as a title page. Which you can complete in your own time for homework.
 
Make sure you ether take a photo of and insert or copy and paste the class ground rules into the second page of your puberty notes.

Activity: After watching the video discuss in pairs and come up with your own definition of puberty. After that give 4 examples of changes that occur during puberty.  
 
Brainstorm: In your groups brainstorm the following question:

"Where do you learn about puberty"

From your brainstorm rank your "top 3" places to learn about puberty and explain why these are the best places to learn.
 
Notes:  Take notes from these slides into your book or copy and paste them into your puberty presentation/document.

    

  

   
 
If you have time your teacher might show you this funny video showing the differences females and males go through during puberty. Otherwise watch it at home.
 
If you still have class time left work on your title page otherwise make sure you complete it for homework.
