Microscopy
This  Achievement standard can be gained at Achieve or Merit level but  not at Excellence.
You need to demonstrate skills in using a light microscope by being able to set up the microscope correctly, focus a prepared slide at the appropriate magnification and make a biological drawing of what you can see down the microscope.  Your drawing must follow the rules for Biological drawings and also be representative of what you can see.
A collection of cells needs to be drawn with parts drawn in the correct proportions, correctly labelled and your drawing must have a complete and accurate title and show the magnification.
Merit requires you to explain the function of two specialised features to the overall functioning of the cell or organism.

In class you will practise preparing slides of biological specimens.  This may involve staining the specimen in order to make the specialised features stand out more.
You will view specimens on low power, medium power and high power.
You will learn the rules for Biological drawings.
You will peer assess biological drawings.
You will annotate two specialised features for each specimen.  The level of your annotations will determine the overall grade you achieve.
