Students Connecting To Horowhenua Colleges’ Wireless Network

This page outlines the procedure for joining the wireless network here at Horowhenua College and also configure your Personal (or H:) and the R : drive.

Firstly, there are six parameters that have to be met before access to the wireless network here at Horowhenua College can be granted.

  • You must be the owner of the device you wish to connect.
  • You must have a signed copy of the contract (signed by you and your parents)
  • Ensure the machine you want to use is wireless enabled and in working order. Look for a symbol or a button like the one shown as a graphic (it varies slightly from model to model but enabling wireless normally starts by pushing the button so that a coloured light shows).
  • You must have an accepted Anti-Virus (AV) programme installed, running, updated and with a current (non trial) license to run until December 2011. The programme must also be set to automatically scan and update at least weekly.

For Windows users, for a list of accepted software visit the following website:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/49500

Mac and Linux users also have to have current and working AV. If you do not carry a programme and a license the college suggests the free software Avast.

If you do not have Anti-Virus installed, working and updated, you will not be given network access.

Once the above parameters have been met and you are presented with wireless networks that are available email Mr Green bgreen@horowhenua.school.nz to arrange a time bring your machine to the Server Room to be checked and to receive a security key.

You need to see a connection named student laptop

At this time confirmation of the above will take place and your details will be recorded into the database. This will not take place during lesson time, as you may be required to wait for some time.

Machines should only be brought to the Server Room at the back of the Student Centre at the time arranged as above. Please be prepared to wait as the process can often take some time.

Once you have now joined the college’s wireless network, you will need to set up the following:

  1. Change the proxy settings within your web browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.) to access the internet.
  2. Access to your school account ‘H’ drive.
